Answer engine optimization, answered.
Direct answers to what businesses actually ask us — including the questions where the honest answer is "no."
What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring a brand's content and online footprint so that AI systems cite it when they answer a question. Those systems — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews — field millions of buying questions a day, and each answer names only two or three brands. AEO is the work of being one of them.
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO optimizes for ranking in a list of results a person then clicks. AEO optimizes for being quoted inside a single synthesized answer, where there is often no click at all. They share foundations such as crawlability, quality and authority, but they diverge on content structure and on what counts as success: SEO measures position and traffic, AEO measures citation rate and share of the answer.
Is AEO the same as GEO (generative engine optimization)?
In practice yes. Answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization describe the same discipline of earning visibility inside AI-generated answers. GEO is the term used in the original academic research from Princeton and IIT Delhi; AEO is more common in commercial use. Some practitioners draw a narrow distinction, with AEO covering direct-answer formats and GEO covering longer generative responses, but the working methods are the same.
How do AI engines decide which sources to cite?
A source has to clear three stages. It must be retrieved, which depends on crawl access, structure and topical relevance. It must then be ranked, which depends on authority, freshness and how clearly it maps to a recognised entity. Finally it must be selected for synthesis, which depends on whether the model can lift a clean, specific, self-contained passage from it. Most pages fail at the third stage.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Technical and on-page changes can shift citations within two to six weeks, because AI engines retrieve live pages and reflect updates quickly. Authority-driven gains, which depend on third-party mentions accumulating, typically take three to six months. Anyone promising movement in days is describing luck rather than a method.
How do you measure AI visibility?
We fix a representative set of buyer questions, run it across every engine on a schedule, and log whether you are cited, in what context, and which competitors appear in your place. You get three numbers back: citation rate, share of voice against named competitors, and sentiment. The questions and the schedule stay fixed because AI answers vary between runs, so a single spot check proves nothing in either direction.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AEO sits on top of SEO and depends on it. A site that cannot be crawled, has no authority and loads slowly will not be cited by an AI engine either. What has changed is that good SEO alone no longer guarantees AI visibility: analysis reported by Search Engine Land puts the overlap between top Google results and AI-cited sources at under 20%, down from roughly 70%.
Can you guarantee my brand will be recommended by ChatGPT?
No, and any agency offering that guarantee is misleading you. AI answers are probabilistic, and engines change their retrieval behaviour without notice. What we commit to is method and measurement: a defined set of buyer questions, a documented baseline, specific optimization work, and honest monthly reporting on what moved and what did not.
How much does AEO cost?
Ripple Agents runs two month-to-month retainers. Starter, $999 per month, covers auditing, prompt research, optimization of up to five priority pages monthly, technical AI SEO and reporting. Premium, $2,999 per month, adds off-site authority and citation building, advanced tracking, competitor monitoring, founder thought leadership and a dedicated account manager. Both can be cancelled at the end of any month.
What kind of businesses benefit most from AEO?
Businesses whose buyers research before purchasing gain the most, because those are the questions people now take to AI assistants. That includes software and SaaS, professional and B2B services, healthcare, finance, education and considered-purchase e-commerce. Businesses competing purely on local walk-in traffic or impulse purchases see less benefit.
What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a plain-text file placed at the root of a website that describes the site to large language models and points them to the pages most worth reading. It is a proposed convention rather than an enforced standard, and support varies between engines, but it is inexpensive to add and helps models form an accurate picture of what a site is about.
Do I need to publish new content for AEO to work?
Usually less than people expect. Most sites already have pages that deserve citation and simply are not structured for extraction, so the first wins tend to come from rewriting and marking up existing pages. New content is commissioned only where prompt research shows a genuine gap that no existing page covers.
